Season’s Beatings: a roller derby yuletide – 19 December

The deciding bout for the 2009 season sold out within hours! The Black’n'Blue Belles, still riding the wave of victory from bout 2, were down a skater due to injury. The game was tight and the Griffins led at halftime, only to have two skaters ejected from the game for major penalties. It was either team’s game, but the Belles managed to skate ahead winning by a super close 2 points in the last jam, to win the season. Most Valuable Player for the season was Bambi von Smash’er of the Surly Griffins. CRDL’s lurid green and purple trophy was awarded to the Belles and is now in their safekeeping, but will not be safe for long…. Half time entertainment was provided by Phantom Drums and the drums of concussion.

Final Score – Black’n'Blue Belles 140 to Surly Griffins 138.


Wild West Wheels: a roller derby rodeo! - 21 November

Bout 2 of CRDL’s first season proved these two local teams mean business. The Surly Griffins and The Black ‘n’ Blue Belles hit the track to another sell-out audience and played a hard-hitting game. The Black ‘n’ Blue Belles came back with feisty determination from their loss in the first bout to romp home, taking out the game by a 30 point lead. Half time entertainment was provided by local rockabilly outfit The Fuelers.

Hell on Wheels: a halloween bout – 24 October

Canberra Roller Derby League hit the flat track for the season debut with a fiery Halloween themed bout. The two CRDL teams, the Black ‘n’ Blue Belles and the Surly Griffins provided sports fans with a fast, furious and hard fought first match. The game was close ‘till half time with the Surly’s getting the edge in the second half and finally taking out the game 149 – 109.

Half-time entertainment was provided by Jumptown Jammers, an ACT swing dance group.

CRDL was thrilled to have a sell-out crowd packing the Southern Cross Sports Stadium, sporting team colours and providing the skaters with plenty of enthusiastic encouragement. This game was a fantastic culmination of a year’s training and hard work establishing the league in Canberra.
