Carnival of Carnage August 2010

by on August 24th, 2010

On Saturday 21 August we held our third Carnival of Carnage demo bout to present the latest crop of CRDL bout ready skaters.  Closed to the public, the Carnival is an opportunity for friends and family to cheer on CRDLs newest roller girls before they join the ranks of the Black ‘n’ Blue Belles, Surly Griffins, Brindabelters, and the Red Bellied Black Hearts this coming season.

The Hot Jammer Donuts shot off the starting line full of enthusiasm and took an early lead in the first half.  Regular team jammers AnneThrax, Blitz, B Afraid, and Rainbow Spite flew around the track in a blur of gold sequins and purple boot covers.  Domino Effect, McSmack, and Posie La Threat showed great jammer assists and kept the pack on their toes.  Great team work meant that at half time the Donuts had the most points on Read Post »

Our New Yellow Stars

by on August 12th, 2010

News from the CRDL training committee:

The Training Committee recently assessed our not-so-new skaters from the March 2010 Freshmeat Intake for their Yellow Star. All skaters passed with flying colours and are moving up the derby ranks very quickly. Their commitment and enthusiasm make us so proud!

The Yellow Star assessment focuses on fitness and endurance and the skaters showed they’ve definitely got what it takes to be a derby star. Many skaters achieved a personal best for their number of laps in 5mins, and everyone embraced the sprawls and falls drill with confidence.

These skaters will now begin serious contact training and work towards having the skills to hit and be hit safely and effectively. Let the bruising begin!

Well done to our new Yellow Stars!

CRDL now with four local teams!

by on August 8th, 2010

This month the Canberra Roller Derby League (CRDL) was thrilled to announce the introduction of two more local teams to their line-up.  Season 2 champions, the Surly Griffins, and victors of the first ever CRDL season in 2009, the Black ‘n’ Blue Belles, welcome to the flat track the Red Bellied Black Hearts and the Brindabelters.  All four teams are set to fight it out for the title of Season 3 winners at bouts on 11 September, 16 October, and a massive semi and grand final double header on 13 November 2010.

The League is excited to have enough skaters and community support for four teams. Read Post »

RollerCon here we come!

by on July 25th, 2010

CRDL’s Ova Bearing, Sugar Plum Crazy, King Cam, Melicious Damage, Dr Hell, Bambi von Smash’er and Fairas Bueller have packed their skate bags and jetted off to RollerCon 2010, in Las Vegas.  These CRDL folk are in for 5 days of roller derby overload (is there such a thing?) of training sessions, seminars, challenge bouts, derby weddings, roller discos and more. The rest of CRDL, sadly left behind, are looking forward to the group’s RollerCon stories and first experiences of banked track roller derby.

VCR play VRDL

by on July 22nd, 2010

CRDL’s Vice City Rollers, travelled down to Melbourne on the invitation of the Victorian Roller Derby League (VRDL) to play in the Double Dissolution bout on the 17th of July. Ballarat Roller Derby, known as The Rat Pack also made the trip the play the VRDL B-team, while CRDL met the VRLD A-team.

This was the Vice City Rollers’ third interleague bout and a big undertaking! The VRDL All Stars just won the national tournament, The Great Southern Slam in Adelaide in June and are a powerhouse in the development of Australian roller derby. The Vice City Rollers are a far less experienced team and knew they would be up for a smashing. They were super keen to play VRDL however, as this would be a fantastic bouting experience. The Rollers fought VRDL to the end, displaying how fast they have taken to the challenges of interleague bouting. Ultimately the Rollers were outplayed by VRDL’s experience and game strategy.

The Rollers were supported by a dedicated group of CRDL skaters and fans who travelled down from Canberra to cheer at the sidelines.

It was a great experience for the rollers who were really pleased with their overall performance, and playing VRDL set a new benchmark for the Rollers’ training development. If you’re going to be smashed by someone it may as well be the national champions!

Scores:

CRDL: 57 vs VRDL Front Bench: 191

BRDL: 97 vs VRDL Back Bench: 113

Farewells

Farewell Sue R Rat!

CRDL is sad to announce our lovely Sue R Rat is leaving the league. Sue R is going out west to build a house, raise chickens and live the country life. We hope she will visit the big smoke often and we wish her well for new adventures!

Sue R came to the league with our very first intake of skaters and has been an integral part of the running of the league from the start. She was league secretary in our first year and has become a leading member of our training committee. Sue R has worked tirelessly for the league over the last eighteen months and has proven herself as an exceptional team player. We will miss her strategic blocking and solid jamming on the track for the Surly Griffins, her thoughtful training sessions and her excellent collection of socks.

Beck and Sue R Rat at The Great Southern Slam

Farewell Beck Wise!

CRDL wishes league skater Beck Wise well as she heads overseas to study and of course play derby, in the USA. Beck has skated with the league in 2010 on the Surly Griffins and has contributed substantially to the development of roller derby in Australia as one of the founding members of Sydney Roller Derby League. We’re looking forward to hearing about Beck’s exploits on the flat track in Texas.
